Our Methods

trainers have vast expertise with a variety of exercise styles. While our methods vary with each individual client, here are some of our core training principles and beliefs:

Exercise programming and execution should aim to enhance movement quality. Movement quality refers to movement with ideal biomechanics (i.e. without unintended compensatory movements or actions due to neurological inhibitions or mechanical restrictions). For more information read our blog article: Movement Quality: The Backbone Of Athletic Success.
The human body was designed to move through a variety of different planes of motion such as frontal plane movements (side-to-side), sagittal plane movements (forward/back), and transverse plane movements (rotation). In reality, the thousands of movements we go through in life and in sport often include movement through different planes of motion simultaneously. Exercise programming should include exercises/movements that involve various planes of motion.
We advocate incorporating fundamental movements/exercises into the programming for all of our clients (unless inappropriate for the specific client). These movements include squatting, lunging, horizontal pushing and pulling, vertical pushing and pulling, rotating/twisting, lateral flexion/side bending, forward flexion/bending (hip hinge) and locomotion/gait.
We advocate programming that enhances activities of daily living and sport. Exercises that have greater carryover to such life activities are considered more “functional” and usually are “multi-joint”, “multi-speed”, “multi-planer”, “ground-based”, and “self-stabilized”. For more information read our blog article: What is Functional Training?
The human body performs a variety of actions in both life and sport. Unless a client’s exercise program is intentionally and highly specific (designed to maximize ability or performance in a very specific skill, activity, task or movement), we believe there is great value in including a wide variety of different types of training and training stimuli in our clients exercise programs. This includes using various loads, speeds of motion, ranges of motion, and energy demands (anaerobic, aerobic, and hybrid activities).
Training intensity must always be appropriate for the individual client. Generally speaking, we try to get each client to train at the highest level of intensity he/she can be successful with. Factors that dictate appropriate intensity levels include experience (beginner, intermediate, advanced), medical factors, psychological factors, and personal preferences.
